Booking a minibus or charter bus rental for a private group tour or an educational school trip in Boston is a safe, reliable, and comfortable way to travel. But who’s going to operate your charter bus rental during your trip? With Boston Charter Bus Company, you’ll have a professional charter bus driver. The cost of a Boston charter bus includes the service of a charter bus driver but there are a few things you should know before booking your trip.

Keep on reading to learn more about the drivers in the Boston Charter Bus Company network!

A charter bus driver in front of a bus

Your charter bus driver will be thoroughly qualified.

At Boston Charter Bus Company, we value safety above all else. This means we have a rigorous screening process for our transportation partners and drivers. To start, all divers are required to have a valid CDL license, with no exceptions. Just know that if you or one of your group members has a CDL license, you won’t be allowed to drive your bus. Drivers must also be up to date on important industry training, pass a thorough background check, have a clean driving record, and pass crucial drug tests.

Your charter bus driver will be committed to your trip and schedule.

Booking with Boston Charter Bus Company means that you’ll have a private group transportation service with a dedicated driver. Your driver will be working with your schedule and itinerary to ensure you have the best tour or event in Boston. If there are changes to your itinerary before your trip, a Boston Charter Bus Company expert can handle those changes. If there are changes during your trip, you can communicate your travel needs with your driver and they’ll always do their best to accommodate.

Your charter bus driver will need to rest.

During long-distance trips to or from Boston, you’ll need to think about rest and booking overnight accommodations. By federal law, charter bus drivers must rest at least 8 hours for every 10 hours of on-duty driving. Your group will need to book lodging arrangements for overnight trips and you’ll have to include a room for your drive. Ensuring your driver is well-rested will help keep your group traveling safely throughout your Boston trip. If you’re lodging overnight, you’ll also need to think about parking for your charter bus. Large cities with heavy tourism usually have central parking hubs for oversized touring vehicles.

Your charter bus driver works hard.

Needless to say, charter bus drivers are committed to giving you the best quality service and that’s hard work. After battling Boston traffic and safely shuttling your group around the city, tipping your driver would be a wonderful way to show your appreciation for their hard work. Tipping isn’t necessary but it’s always greatly appreciated. Your rental cost includes base pay for your driver but doesn’t include optional tips. Standard charter bus tips can range from 5-15% of the total cost of your rental. The best way to tip your driver is with cash at the end of your trip.

Guide to Visiting Boston’s South End Neighborhood https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/south-end-neighborhood-guide/ https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/south-end-neighborhood-guide/#respond Tue, 25 Oct 2022 19:04:00 +0000 https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/?p=255 If you want to experience all the things that make folks want to live here, your group should not pass up the chance to visit Boston’s South End neighborhood! We’ve put together this guide to exploring the district with a group, so all you’ll have to worry about is hopping aboard your private charter bus rental and enjoying the ride between the quaint and historical sites South End has to offer.

Keep reading to learn more about visiting South End with a group, and be sure to call 617-314-7577 if you have any questions about your transportation services in Boston. The Boston Charter Bus Company team is here 24/7 to help you with the logistics and to offer a free, no-obligation quote for your Boston bus rental!

A row of brick Victorian houses in Boston's South End neighborhood

Why Book a Bus in South End?

Boston’s South End neighborhood is far more residential than tourist-filled locales like North End, Beacon Hill, and Back Bay. Perfect for veteran visitors, South End is full of hidden gems and insider haunts—from refinished brownstones to repurposed warehouses. Whether you’re here to tour the largest still–standing Victorian row house district in the country, to stroll through the 11 greenspaces, or check out the growing LGBTQ+ scene, South End will not disappoint.

That being said, since the district is geared more toward long-term residents, getting around South End with a large group of out-of-towners can be tricky if you’re unfamiliar with the area. No MBTA trains run through the district and limited public bus routes wind their way through this part of town.

This is where a charter bus rental can help! Rather than navigating the city’s bus lines with a crowd of 20+ travelers, everyone can simply climb aboard their private motorcoach and let a professional bus driver handle the rest. No one will have to worry about missing dinner reservations, and there will always be enough storage space to stash your luggage between stops. Get in touch with our reservation team today by calling 617-314-7577, and we’ll be happy to connect your group with the ideal Boston charter bus or minibus rental to suit your itinerary, headcount, and amenity needs.

Top Group Destinations in South End

Now that you have an idea as to how to get around South End with a group, all that’s left is to fill out your itinerary! Here are some of the neighborhood’s highlights that previous travelers have recommended for Boston visitors:

SoWa

The South of Washington (SoWa) subdistrict, located roughly from Albany to Washington and East Berkeley to Massachusetts Avenue, is home to some of the most critically acclaimed art galleries in Boston. Your art enthusiasts can easily spend an entire day exploring the brick-and-beam industrial studios and converted warehouse spaces that house the city’s brightest up-and-coming talent. Swing by the International Poster Gallery to admire antique travel prints, or plan a visit on a spring or summer Sunday to peruse the local vendors, artisans, and farm-to-table eateries of the outdoor SoWa Open Market.

Charter Bus Tip: Find a piece you can’t help but take home? Don’t worry about lugging your treasures around the district on foot—that’s what your private Boston charter bus is here for! Your professional bus driver will be happy to look after any personal belongings, luggage, or recent purchases you leave on your bus rental so that you can explore SoWa unburdened.

A ballet dancer poses on a dimly lit stage

Boston Center of the Arts

Address: 539 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02116

If you’re only in South End for an evening, odds are your group is here to catch a show at the Boston Center of the Arts! This nonprofit visual and performing arts venue is made up of several rehearsal spaces and theaters, as well as restaurants, galleries, and more! Watch the Boston Ballet perform original choreography, or rent out to Cyclorama Building for your next only-in-South-End event, trade show, wedding, or private party!

Charter Bus Tip: Renting a bus in Boston is one of the best ways to ensure a large group of arts patrons arrives at the center with plenty of time to find their seats. Your charter bus driver will pull up near the entrance on Tremont Street at least 5 minutes before your scheduled arrival time to ensure easy unloading for every passenger.

Victorian Rowhouse District

Of course, one of the most popular ways to experience the South End is to simply walk around and check out the houses! Whether you’re visiting on a history class field trip or just like gawking at pretty real estate, spend an hour or two walking around the landmarked Victorian Rowhouse District along Tremont Street, Columbus Avenue, and Massachusetts Avenue. There, you’ll find block after block of gorgeous brownstone residential buildings, appearing as they would when they were built in the 1880s.

Charter Bus Tip: Boston’s older and cobblestone streets are not the most friendly to wheelchair users and folks with mobility devices. Rather than missing out on the city’s historic curb appeal, book an ADA-complaint charter bus so everyone can admire the cityscape from the comfort of a climate-controlled cabin! Just say the word, and your Boston bus rental representative can find a motorcoach with a wheelchair lift, wide aisles with handrails, and plenty of storage for canes and walkers.

A group of men toast glasses of beer in a pub

J.J. Foley’s Café

Address: 117 E Berkeley St, Boston, MA 02118

One thing South End residents can’t get enough of is a relaxed evening at a local dive bar—so if your group wants to live it up like a local, look no further than J.J. Foley’s. This Irish pub has been a neighborhood mainstay since its opening in 1909, and much of the fare has not changed over the years. Dig into beef burgers freshly ground and hand-packed in-house or order a round of hearty appetizers for the table as you watch a game on the TVs or play a round of darts. And yes, the bar area is roomy enough to easily accommodate large dining groups!

Boston “Deep Cuts” for Frequent Travelers https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/boston-deep-cuts-for-frequent-travelers/ https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/boston-deep-cuts-for-frequent-travelers/#respond Wed, 17 Aug 2022 19:05:40 +0000 https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/?p=242 Tired of eating the same old Fenway Franks? Bodega is a store in Boston hidden inside a convenience store.

Bodega

Did you ever expect to find a hidden upscale streetwear store behind a fake Snapple machine in the back of an unassuming convenience store? No? Then prepare to be surprised! The entrance to Bodega is disguised as a convenience store, complete with tuna, laundry detergent, canned goods, and other nonperishables you’d expect to find there. The inside of the store is cramped, stuffed with food and convenience items, and is not very appealing. But in the back corner, open the Snapple machine door to enter the real Bodega. You’ll find high-end sneakers, street-style hoodies, jeans, and more on lacquered shelves in an open, hip environment.

Address: 6 Clearway St, Boston, MA 02115

Charter bus tip: Bodega is on a one-way, narrow road that is often full of cars utilizing the street parking. If you are renting a Boston charter bus and want to visit Bodega, it’s best to use an 18-passenger minibus to be able to navigate the tight street, or park up the street and walk the rest of the way to Bodega.

The Hood Milk Bottle in Boston serves ice cream and snacks outside the Boston Children's Museum.

Hood Milk Bottle

There are many great restaurants in Boston for foodies to explore, and the region is known for its seafood fare like clam chowder, lobster rolls, and fish and chips. But one unique restaurant in the Boston area is the Hood Milk Bottle. Located right next to the Boston Children’s Museum, the 40-foot-tall wooden milk bottle got its start in 1930 as a stand selling homemade ice cream by Arthur Gagner. After a decade of being abandoned during the 1960s, it was purchased by a dairy company that moved it to the Children’s Museum. Today, it’s still an ice cream stand, and sometimes movies are projected onto the large white side of the bottle.

The Mapparium is located inside The Mary Baker Eddy Library.

The Mapparium

Boston is a city rich in history, and history buffs will find themselves right at home when they explore the historical side of Boston. One stop you will want to add to your Boston history tour is the Mapparium. The Mapparium is a giant, colorful, inside-out stained glass globe built in 1925, and is inside The Mary Baker Eddy Library. The library also serves as a museum and repository for the papers of Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. The Mapparium itself is three stories high and allows you to see the world in a way that doesn’t distort the surface of the earth. The map hasn’t been changed since 1935, meaning you can still find places like Siam and French Indochina.

Address: 210 Massachusetts Ave, Boston, MA 02115

100 bricks adorn Winthrop Lane and tell the story of Boston's history.

Boston Bricks

A few steps away from the Boston Freedom Trail, in Winthrop Lane between Otis and Arch, are the Boston Bricks. The Boston Bricks are a whimsical art installation that tells the story of Boston’s past and present with bronze, brick-sized reliefs along the pathway. There are almost 100 of them, and the project is funded by the Browne Fund in Boston and A. W. Perry and Ryan Associates. Find bricks dedicated to aggressive Boston drivers, 19th-century baseball gloves and Fenway Park, Boston newspapers, the Franklin Park Zoo, and other things that make Boston the city it is today.

Address: Winthrop Lane, Boston, MA 02110

Charter bus tip: The Boston Bricks are a great detour for student groups or field trips, and spotting the bricks are a fun way for kids to learn about Boston’s history. If you are looking for group transportation for your Boston school group, Boston Charter Bus Company can help. Just give us a call at 617-314-7577 and we can help you book a school trip bus rental in Boston.

The Make Way for Ducklings Statue in Boston Public Garden is a favorite of the citygoers.

Make Way for Ducklings Statue

If you are exploring the Boston Public Garden, Franklin Park, Boston Common, or any of the other parks and outdoor spaces in Boston, be sure to check out the adorable “Make Way for Ducklings” statue by Nancy Schön. The beloved little statue features Mrs. Mallard and her brood of eight ducklings marching across the road, whose names are Jack, Kack, Lack, Mack, Nack, Ouack, Pack, and Quack. During holidays and other special occasions, you can find Mrs. Mallard and her ducklings dressed up in Santa hats, sports jerseys, and other little outfits.

Address: 4 Charles St, Boston, MA 02116

Boston Light is the first lighthouse that was ever built in the United States.

Boston Light

Looking to brush up on your nautical history? Visit the Boston Harbor Islands Welcome Center on the Rose Kennedy Greenway and sign up for a fully narrated, two-hour tour of three Boston lighthouses. One of the lighthouses on the tour, Boston Light, is the first lighthouse that was ever built in the United States. Dating back to 1716, Boston Light is the oldest lighthouse in America that is still standing. If you have a group of 25 people or more, you can inquire about discount pricing for your tour.

Address: 191 W Atlantic Ave, Boston, MA 02110

You can find a 5,000-square-foot garden atop Fenway Park that grows different produce.

Fenway Park Garden

Fenway Park, a staple for Boston sports fans and just fans of baseball in general, may not be what you expect to see on a list of hidden gems in Boston. But what many don’t know is that there’s actually an entire vegetable garden atop Fenway Park, and you can see it! Next time you are at a game, walk over toward the back of the left-field wall, just beyond the left-field foul pole. Go up to the third floor of the suite level and look down to see the 5,000-square-foot garden, which was built in 2014 and produces nearly 6,000 pounds of produce a year. The garden grows herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, broccoli, eggplant, carrots, zucchini, and more. The produce is used at various eateries throughout the ballpark and nearby restaurants, and any leftover harvest at the end of the season is donated to local Boston food banks.

Address: 4 Jersey St, Boston, MA 02215

Charter bus tip: Fenway Park, like many other sports stadiums, tends to be a complete madhouse, especially during game day. A charter bus driver can drop you and your group off so you can avoid the traffic and hassle of finding parking. At Boston Charter Bus Company, we have experience providing group transportation for sports teams and sports fans alike.

large group of people enjoying dinner together

PAGU

Dine here with: a close-knit group of adventurous eaters in the mood to share a spit-roasted pig, massive one-pot paella, or Japanese/Spanish-fusion dishes and tapas.

PAGU is the definitive place to go in the Boston area for sharing a meal made with bold flavors and innovative fusion. It’s best to gather here for PAGU’s special group-dining options, like a whole suckling pig roast for at least 10 folks, or a large paella party for anywhere between 10 and 100 of your closest friends.

For a large private event like a wedding reception or corporate dinner, PAGU also offers the option to customize a four-course prix-fixe menu or family-style four-course tasting menu. This is a great choice for diners who want to dig into the dishes this kitchen does best, like spicy hand-pulled biang biang noodles, squid ink unagi bao buns, koji-marinated ribeye steak, and Guchi’s Midnight Ramen.

When it comes to atmosphere, PAGU’s best event spaces are perfect for a small, intimate dinner or a celebratory gathering. Your options include:

  • A Private Dining Room that can be fully enclosed with elegant, sliding translucent walls. It can fit 20 people for dinner or 35 for a standing reception, and includes a TV and sound system for presentations.
  • The Mezzanine for a dinner of 20 or standing reception for 35 (includes TV and sound system).
  • El Centro, a central communal gathering space that fits 34 seated (or 50 standing).
  • The Main Dining Room for 40 people.
  • Combining the main dining room and private dining room for a 50-guest dinner (or 80 standing reception).
  • The large outdoor patio, perfect for smoky summer pig roasts for 80 seated folks (or a reception of passed plates for 120 guests).
  • A full restaurant buyout for up to 150 people (174 standing)

ReelHouse

Dine here with: seafood-obsessed Bostonians (especially oyster-slurpers and clam chowder connoisseurs) who can’t get enough harborside pictures of the city skyline for their Instagram feeds.

Head over to the waterfront in East Boston to enjoy a dinner party featuring a menu full of fresh seafood and American dishes in a medley of international flavors. We’re talking clam and corn chowder topped with smoked bacon, grilled flat iron steak in a Louisiana BBQ sauce, and classic lobster rolls alongside shareables like a pot of white-wine-steamed mussels with lemongrass butter and Malaysian-style chicken wings.

If you’re here to party with a salty bunch of seafood lovers who really deserve a treat, order your table a Grand Shellfish Tower full of oysters, shrimp cocktail, littleneck clams, ceviche, and lobster.

ReelHouse offers private and semi-private group dining options for parties both large and small. A small gathering—like for a birthday party or corporate team outing of 16 people or less—can reserve a long, wooden communal table with panoramic views of the harbor and Boston city skyline for dinner. Larger groups, like for a big graduation party or family reunion, can enjoy booking the outdoor waterfront patio for 40-175 people, or the inside dining room for 40-150 people.

group clinking beer glasses at a group dinner at a brewery

Trillium Fort Point

Dine here with: Beer snobs and cicerones who love Trillium’s one-of-a-kind brews, and want to taste what their local farm-to-table kitchen is dishing out.

Also one of Boston’s best breweries, Trillium has a full kitchen serving up New England comfort food in Boston’s bustling seaport district, Fort Port.

Trillium’s flavors and philosophy is (literally) rooted in a farmhouse-inspired experience, meaning they focus on creating food and beer from homegrown agriculture at the Trillium Farm in North Stonington, Connecticut, and from a partner network of local New England vendors.

When you book a private event here, you can customize your dining menu. Trillium’s menu is typically loaded with hearty, versatile mains like a grain bowl topped with roasted root veggies, goat cheese and pumpkin vinaigrette, and cheddar mac and cheese with the option to add lobster, brisket, duck confit, or crispy chicken. And don’t miss out on their mouth-watering shareables, like poutine topped with Vermont cheese curds, and curry eggplant dip.

At Trillium Brewing in Fort Point, you can choose from various private event spaces:

  • Two private dining rooms, with one larger than the other, for parties of 30-35 guests and 48-65 guests.
  • The semi-private taproom option for up to 25 guests who can enjoy full access to the bar and multiple tables for mingling in a sectioned-off area.
  • A full dining room buyout that can fit a seated dinner for up to 80 guests.
  • Roof deck with private bar and Seaport views, available for semi and full buyouts.

TABLE

Dine here with: up to 32 curious diners and foodies who love (a.) Italian food so good it will change their life, (b.) family-style communal dining where you need to pass the plates and (c.) prix-fixe seven course menu experiences.

One of the best restaurants in Boston’s North End neighborhood also offers one of the most perfect group dining experiences in the city. As a one-room restaurant with two long, communal wooden dining tables and a 32-person capacity, TABLE is great for an intimate group gathering in a space that feels like the family dining room had a modern-rustic facelift.

The seven-course menu changes seasonally to feature a family-style Italian meal beginning with an app and salad all the way through to mains and a dessert. You can enjoy dishes like a pan-seared zucchini and artichoke cake topped with mint and lemon yogurt, seared octopus served on parmesan polenta, a mid-meal palette cleanser of fruit sorbet, and rich, meaty mains like veal meatballs and homemade short rib ravioli.

It’s important to note that the menu at TABLE is strictly prix-fixe for seven courses, and what you see is what you get. They are unable to accommodate vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free or dairy-free diets. Please review the menu on their website before booking to ensure it features meals all of your guests will enjoy! Also note that the entire restaurant is a 32-seat communal dining room, so when you book a private party, you’re booking each seat at $98 a head.

plates of seafood served at a group dinner

Commonwealth

Dine here with: a massive party of foodies who want to nosh on a medley of delicious hors d’oeuvres in an atmospherically-unmatched Boston event space.

A popular spot for wedding receptions and large private gatherings, Commonwealth restaurant in Cambridge is the place to go for New American eats with refined flavors. Plan an event here to spoil your guests with an indulgent, family-style prix-fixe party menu filled with dishes like Giuseppe’s burrata, seasonal catch/shellfish, and roasted chicken in a house BBQ sauce. And don’t forget to pile on mouth-watering sides like farro risotto mixed with roasted squash, broccoli rabe, pickled peppers and parmesan, and duck fat fries served with duck fat aioli for dipping.

But it’s the hors d’oeuvres list here that really sings with options like a raw bar of local oysters and Chef’s choice ceviche, or local cheese and charcuterie boards made with meats and cheeses also found for sale in the Commonwealth restaurant’s market. For a large reception, choose from passed platters that will really leave an impression at your event. Guests will go crazy for finger foods like lobster bites with spicy aioli, prosciutto-wrapped fruit, goat cheese-stuffed cherry peppers, crispy polenta bites, and “Notorious P.I.G Blankets” to dip in a smoked secret sauce.

For a private event space, you have a lot to choose from. At the Commonwealth, you can reserve:

  • The Private Dining Room, which can seat up to 30 guests for dinner, and comes with a 75’’ TV for presentations.
  • Commonwealth’s Market, where up to 100 guests can enjoy charcuterie and bites in the restaurant’s trendy, refined-rustic marketplace.
  • The Main Dining Room, which can seat up to 80 people.
  • A full restaurant buy-out for up to 200 people.

Commonwealth is also part of the Watermark Residences building, so you can reserve Watermark Event Space and have your gathering catered by Commonwealth. Choose from:

  • The Fireplace Lounge, a cozy and casual space to mingle, and the Broad Canal Lounge, a quiet space with library-vibes for cocktails and finger foods—which can be booked separately for small groups of 30-to-40, or together for a reception of up to 75 people.
  • The Sky Deck on the 21st floor of Watermark West which features city skyline views, and is best during warmer months for groups up to 50 people.
  • The Roof Terrace Garden, a beautiful landscaped deck on the 2nd floor of the Watermark that can entertain up to 200 folks.

With staggering views of Boston’s waterfront from the Charlestown Navy Yard, Pier 6 is the premiere place in this coastal New England city to gather and dine during the warmer months. • The outdoor waterfront patio with a full bar for 40-200 guests.
  • The inside dining and bar area for parties of 40-125.

In the past, it was used for a variety of purposes, including as a camp for the British before the Revolutionary War. Today, those fascinated by history can find numerous statues and monuments documenting the history of both the park and Boston itself. The park also features trails, space for relaxing or throwing a frisbee around, and softball fields.

In addition to its variety of history landmarks, the park also features a pond at the center called the Boston Common Frog Pond. The pond serves as a splash pad in the summer, and an ice rink during the winter. Seasonal activities include a carousel, the Duckling Day Parade, and the Memorial Day Garden of Flags.

This 485-acre park is Boston’s largest open space and spans the Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, and Dorchester neighborhoods in Boston. It features the second oldest public golf course in the nation, tennis courts, baseball fields, and basketball courts. It also is a famed cross country course, and hosts several meets throughout the year. Those who are seeking some arts and culture during their trip to the park can also find an open-air performance space called the “Playhouse in the Park.”

Franklin Park is also home to the Franklin Park Zoo. Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the 72-acre zoo contains more than 220 species of animals. It features several main exhibit areas, including The Tropical Forest, Serengeti Crossing, Outback Trail, and Kalahari Kingdom. Franklin Park Zoo also offers behind-the-scenes tours with some of their animals, including red pandas, tigers, and sloths.

Public Garden

The first botanic garden in the United States, Boston’s Public Garden is adjacent to the Boston Common. Today, you can find a variety of flowers, historical landmarks, and things to do, including the famous Make Way For Ducklings statue. One notable feature at the park is a statue of George Washington by Thomas Ball, which dates back to 1869 and is considered one of the best equestrian statues in the United States.

At the park, you can take a scenic ride in a swan boat through the lagoon, plus observe real-life swans. In 1868, the first pair of swans arrived in the park. Since then, with a few exceptions, a pair of swans has graced the park. A good time to visit is in early May, when the masses of tulips and other foliage bursts into bloom around the lagoon, making for a breathtaking and colorful boat ride.

Boston National Historic Park

The Boston National Historic Park is the ultimate outdoor stroll for those curious about history-making moments in Boston’s past. It consists of eight different sites, seven of which are connected by the Freedom Trail.

The sites are below:

Bunker Hill Monument: This monument is a granite obelisk constructed in the middle of the 91st century to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill fought on June 17, 1775.

Charlestown Navy Yard: This area was used during the Revolutionary War as a shipyard, and served as a base for the United States Navy until 1975. Today, the yard is home to the USS Constitution, the oldest floating commissioned naval vessel in the world, and the USS Cassin Young, a destroyer from World War II that operates as a museum.

Dorchester Heights: In March 1776, George Washington fortified the site of Dorchester Heights, compelling the British to withdraw from Boston and ending the 10-month long Siege of Boston. In 1902, a monument was erected at the site. It’s the only site not located along the Freedom Trail.

Faneuil Hall: First constructed in the 1740s, Faneuil Hall was the site of important pro-independence speeches that shaped U.S. history.

Old North Church: Built in 1723, the Old North Church was the site where Paul Revere lit signal lanterns before his “midnight ride” that led to the beginning of the Revolutionary War.

Old South Meeting House: This meeting house was constructed in 1729 and was the site of many pre-revolutionary meetings, including a meeting the evening prior to the Boston Tea Party.

Old State House: The Old State House has a history rich in politics; it was the seat of the Colonial government, and afterwards the State government, until 1798. The Boston Massacre took place in front of the building, and reenactments of the Boston Massacre are often performed in front of the building.

Paul Revere House: As one of the oldest surviving buildings in Boston, the Paul Revere House currently serves as a museum. It was built in 1680 and purchased by Paul Revere in 1770.

A charter bus would be a great and convenient way to shuffle you and your group between sites, and depending on the size of your group and time needed for rental, it’s more affordable than you might think.

A Group Guide to Boston Airports https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/group-guide-to-boston-airports/ https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/group-guide-to-boston-airports/#respond Sat, 31 Jul 2021 18:15:44 +0000 https://www.bostoncharterbuscompany.com/blog/?p=177 Flying out of or into Boston? While arranging air travel in and around the city is relatively straightforward—there is only one airport within city limits, after all—navigating a busy airport with a large group of flyers can be tedious and tiresome if you don’t know what to expect.

Luckily, we at Boston Charter Bus Company know the ins and outs of traveling throughout Boston—so we drafted this handy guide to make your flights in the Boston area as easy as possible:

The sun rises over an empty gate at Boston Logan International Airport, a passenger plane visible outside the floor-to-ceiling windows

Logan International Airport (KBOS)

Address: Boston, MA 02128

When most folks talk about flying into or out of Boston, they are more than likely referring to Boston Logan. As the busiest airport in the Northeast (excluding the NYC area) and the area’s major international air hub, KBOS offers nonstop services to destinations throughout North and South America, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. It acts as the operating base for JetBlue but is also serviced by most major domestic and many international airlines, from Air Canada to Virgin Atlantic and many in-between.

In terms of layout, Boston Logan is relatively easy to navigate thanks to its hub-and-spoke design. Its four terminals—A, B, C, and E—are all accessible by the Central Parking Garage at the center of the complex, and all the ticketing and security gates are within walking distance of each other for easy mobility.

Food

As the Boston area’s most popular and frequented airport, it stands to reason that it offers the greatest variety of food options. There are dozens of places to grab some grub or a drink that caters to a wide range of tastes, budgets, and timeframes—from Dunkin’ Donuts (New England’s beloved) to sit-down steak and cocktail places like Legal’s Test Kitchen.

Here are some of the top flyer-favorite places to eat in Boston logan:

  • Berkshire Farms Market — Looking for last-minute “only in Boston” goodies for your friends back home? This grab-and-go spot features all sorts of locally made products from western Massachusetts and local Boston treats, like the breakfast pastries from South End Buttery.
  • Lucca — This satellite location of an acclaimed Italian restaurant of the same name in North End and Back Bay offers cozy bistro ambiance and signature dishes like rigatoni with wild boar and pappardelle with bolognese.
  • Kelly’s Roast Beef — If you’re flying into Boston and want a sneak preview of some of the city’s most popular dishes, this is your stop. This local chain specializes in North Shore-style roast beef sandwiches, lobster rolls, and other comforting seafood plates.

Services

Aside from nonstop international flights and some good food, Boston Logan offers flyers a range of comforts to make their airport experience less stressful—including an in-house hair salon in Terminal C and multiple kids’ play areas, nursing rooms, and pet relief centers throughout the post-security facilities.

Accessibility

Boston Logan International provides many of the basic accessibility services required to allow all travelers to make the most of their airport experience. All terminals have accessible and family restrooms, and service animals are always welcome here. And while every terminal has two floors, ramps and elevators are easy to locate in each and provide signage in Braille.

For more accessibility information, like the distance between the curb and ticket counters of every terminal, check out the Massachusetts Port Authority’s official website for the airport

Parking

Like we mentioned before, all terminals are within easy walking distance of the large parking garage at the center of Boston Logan. Both economy parking and long-term parking are located closest to Terminal E, and all terminals offer designated motorcoach drop-off/pick-up zones near the baggage claim exits.

Boston Logan also offers a free cell phone lot for those awaiting arrivals, located five minutes away from most terminals. Just have your bus driver follow the signage along Hotel Drive and Service Road, and it should be simple enough to find. Keep in mind that there are no concessions or restroom facilities available in the lot—so you may want to secure a bus with an onboard restroom if you suspect your driver will be waiting long.

An excited family preps to board an airplane

Worcester Regional Airport (KORH)

Address: 375 Airport Dr, Worcester, MA 01602

Perhaps less-known than its inner-city counterpart, Worcester Regional Airport is a Central Massachusetts transportation hub located an hour west of Boston, offering domestic flight options through American Airlines, Delta, and JetBlue.

Since it is a smaller airport, your group may have better success snagging a cheaper flight through KORH—especially if you’re looking for a quick non-stop throughout the Northeast or a simple transfer to JFK in New York City. And while the airport is a smaller facility (and therefore has a more limited range of flight options on any given day), sparser crowds make check-in and security lines a breeze compared to Boston Logan.

Food

Worcester Regional Airport is home to two convenience stores (one before security, one after) operated by Mirage Express. There, flyers can pick up made-to-order sandwiches, pizza, hotdogs, non-alcoholic beverages, and other sundries like toiletries and magazines.

Services

Beyond commercial flights, this airport also offers one of the closest access to air freight services, ground handling, and private plane facilities to Boston—an added perk for Boston businesses that want to skip the hustle and bustle of Boston Logan’s air traffic.

Within the terminal, your group can enjoy amenities such as free WiFi and comfy seating near the airport’s four gates.

Accessibility

The distance between the outside sidewalk and the ticket counter is 65 feet, and all entrances to the complex include ramps. Luggage carts are available, as well as accessible restrooms and Braille signage throughout the building.

Parking

Considering this airport is a small one, the parking situation is uncomplicated compared to larger air hubs. There is no cell phone lot on the grounds, but your airport shuttle driver should have no problem finding ample parking in the lot adjacent to the terminal before your flight is scheduled to land.

History Buffs

Best time to visit: May through October—most historic sites and museums close for the winter

Best neighborhoods: Downtown and Beacon Hill

Boston is not only one of the oldest cities in the country, but also one of the best-preserved. Your sightseeing group can spend weeks touring monuments, heritage sites, and old architecture and still not cover it all!  No matter where you go, keep in mind that most historical sites in Boston are outdoors—so you’ll want to plan your visit when the weather is nice.

You’ll also want a sturdy pair of walking shoes, because one of the best ways to explore Boston’s history is by walking the Freedom Trail. This 2.5-mile walking trail highlights 16 places throughout Downtown and the North End, including the legendary Old North Church and the Boston Common (the oldest park in America). Don’t worry if you’re visiting with wheelchair users or folks with mobility concerns, though. Boston Charter Bus Company can connect you with an ADA-compliant coach at no additional cost, and your bus driver can drop you off near the most popular sights!

When you’re done exploring the Boston Freedom Trail, you’ll definitely want to wander over to Beacon Hill. This neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city, so even if you only have time to look at the centuries-old brick buildings through your window as you pass by in your bus rental, it’s well worth the trip. If you do have time to walk around, keep your eyes peeled for little gold signs throughout the district; they designate historically significant buildings, former homes of famous Bostonians, and more!

Sports Fans

Best time to visit: when your favorite sport is in season—Boston hosts major league teams all throughout the year

Best neighborhood: Fenway-Kenmore (home to Fenway Park)

As any Boston sports fan can tell you, the city has a team and a venue for nearly any major league sport and an avid fan base for each! So whether you’re a basketball fan wanting to watch the Celtics in action or a tailgater crowd gearing up for the next Patriots’ game, you’re bound to find someone to root for in Boston.

One popular sports venue your long-time sports fans and first-time Boston visitors should make time for is the famous Fenway Park. Even if you’re not a Red Sox fan, no baseball enthusiast should pass the chance to tour the oldest ballpark in the MLB. Guided tours of the park are available all year round (even during baseball season), so your sports fans should have easy access to the stadium’s most historic spots, including the Green Monster, the Lone Red Seat, Pesky’s Pole, and more.

Still not satisfied after your Fenway tour? Explore a broader sense of the region’s sports history at the New England Sports Museum! The facility showcases the accomplishments and larger-than-life athletes from the Boston area, with general guided tours scheduled between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. most days and personalized talks with the curators available upon request.

Foodies

Best time to visit: Summertime—most Boston food festivals happen between June and October

Best Neighborhood: North End

Home to a lot of signature foods, Boston has tons of flavors, festivals, and food-centric guided tours to keep your foodies satisfied. Chow down on lobster rolls at the Boston Public Market, sample clam chowder in one of the waterfront neighborhoods, or treat yourself to a Boston Cream Pie at its birthplace in the Omni Parker House. And if you time your visit right, your group can enjoy Boston’s finest fare at one of the many food festivals hosted throughout the year. Many of North End’s Italian restaurants host specials in honor of Saint Anthony’s Feast in September, and some of the city’s most acclaimed chefs prep new and innovative eats during the Dine Out Boston festival in August.

Looking for something to wash it all down with? Those traveling with a 21+ crowd are in luck: beer is big in Boston. And between the lineup of Boston-born beer companies like Harpoon, Samuel Adams, and Trillium, the many smaller craft breweries, and the Oktoberfest events in the fall, your beer enthusiasts are sure to have something to do and drink while you’re in town. Reserve a private shuttle service before you hit the bars, and your group will have a professional DD and a reliable ride back to the hotel!

Shopaholics

Best time to visit: April or May for post-Spring Clean thrifting, end of summer and winter for seasonal department sales

Best Neighborhood: Back Bay

Besides looking at monuments or exploring the local food scene, many first-time Boston visitors make time to peruse the city’s clothing stores while they’re here. And it’s no surprise why—in the city, shoppers pay no sales tax on clothing purchases under $175. And even if you buy more than that, the sales tax is still only 6.5%: much less than in surrounding states.

If your group is interested in luxury brands and high-end boutiques, consider paying Back Bay a visit. The neighborhood is home to many shopping centers, including Newbury Street (which is lined with international and local boutiques) and Copley Place (which boasts Neiman Marcus, Jimmy Choo, Louboutin, Dior, and Burberry storefronts). But if you want to explore the neighborhood while on a budget, you can always find a consignment shop or two after window shopping in the ritzy districts.

How to Get Around Boston

Just like the sights you decide to see in town, how your first-timers get around Boston also depends on who you’re with and what interests you:

The “T”

Boston’s public transportation system, lovingly referred to as the “T,” consists of buses and trains that radiate from downtown to the surrounding cities and suburbs. Most major attractions and neighborhoods are accessible by public transit, and locals and tourists alike say it’s easy to use—even for out-of-town visitors here for the first time. In order to ride the T, passengers can purchase a refillable paper ticket or a hard plastic card, with one-way fare starting at $1.70 per rider.

The T is a transport method best used by groups of less than 6 adults who won’t mind walking a few blocks if there isn’t a station close to your destination. Larger groups and groups with kids may find it challenging to keep everyone together on the trains, especially during rush hour when the cars are packed.

Taxis and Rideshares

Taxicabs, Ubers, and Lyfts are great modes of transport for smaller groups who don’t have a solid itinerary. Boston is a heavily trafficked city when it comes to these services, so your group can hail a cab or rideshare practically anywhere. Also, they can take you practically anywhere there’s a road, which makes them a flexible option for groups who want the freedom to go where and when they want to, without waiting around for a train or public bus.

That being said, if you’re traveling with a larger crowd and relying on rideshares, you’ll likely need to split into multiple vehicles to get between destinations. This means you’ll need to pay multiple fares between stops. And considering that rates vary depending on the season, local driver availability, and the time of year, so your group won’t know what your transportation expenses will be until after your trip—which is not ideal if you’re traveling on a set budget.

Private Bus Rental

Reserving a personalized bus rental is one of the easiest ways for large groups to traverse Boston together for many reasons. For one thing, your bus rental includes a professional driver and a bespoke motorcoach that only serves your group, so you won’t need to worry about sharing your ride with other sightseers or locals commuting home from work. And because your coach bus only serves your group, it only operates on a route and schedule you make for it—so as long as you’re willing to plan ahead, you can arrive nearly anywhere in the city, all together and right when you want to be there.

Even better, when you reserve with a provider like Boston Charter Bus Company, you’ll have access to a wide range of motorcoaches big and small. Need a larger coach to keep your history class comfortable? Many full-size charter buses come with comfort-minded amenities like TV screens, a DVD player, and reclining seats—so your students can watch movies and relax during the long hauls into town. Or, if you just need a small shuttle so your coworkers can unwind in the city after a big conference, a minibus rental with onboard WiFi is sure to keep everyone connected and entertained between stops. So whether you’re transporting 10 people or 100, a private bus rental can keep your first-time Boston visitors comfortable throughout the city.

Since the city is known for its art, history, and hipster culture, it’s the perfect place to brewery-hop with a group of close friends or coworkers.

COVID-19 Safety Precautions

Before we delve into an overview of some of Boston’s best breweries, it’s important to acknowledge that many breweries were forced to temporarily close down from early 2020 onwards due to COVID-19. We recommend checking the websites for each location to see their updated COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions prior to planning your trip. In some cases, certain bars and breweries have reopened but with limited or first-come-first-serve outdoor seating, while others are offering pickup or delivery services through third-party apps.

Dorchester Brewing Co.

Location: North Dorchester

Address: 1250 Massachusetts Ave., Boston, MA 02125

Phone: 617-514-0900

A former abandoned warehouse with a new makeover, the Dorchester Brewing Co. is nothing short of intriguing. It’s one of the major beer hotspots in Dorchester offering over 20 beers on tap and delicious brews featuring ales, stouts, and lagers. They also recently expanded and added a second-floor greenhouse deck, which means your group can enjoy the sunshine while drinking a cool glass of beer. They also have an existing collaboration with M&M BBQ, just in case anyone in your group gets hungry. Feel free to store the leftovers in your private bus rental on the way back home.

Charter Bus Parking: Parking is relatively straightforward at Dorchester Brewing Co, with the only rule being not to park in neighboring parking lots to avoid the risk of being towed. There are several spots for free on-street parking without meters, which is a huge plus. However, depending on your bus size, it may or may not fit in the parking space.

Cambridge Brewing Company

Location: Cambridge

Address: 1 Kendall Square Bldg 100, Cambridge, MA 02139

Phone: 617-494-1994

For a taste of historical Boston, Cambridge Brewing Company is the place to go with a group of friends. It has a New Age gastropub feel with an antique touch since it’s the oldest brewery in the city. Try out their flagship Belgian-style brews or dig into their popular buffalo chicken tenders while sitting inside or on the patio (in a socially distanced fashion). Whatever you decide, there’s something for everyone at this brewery.

Charter Bus Parking: There are two ways to park when you’re visiting the Cambridge Brewing Company. Validated parking is available at the One Kendall Square Parking Garage on Binney street, or you can choose the on-street metered option. Don’t forget to travel with enough money to keep the meter running, since that won’t be included in your charter bus quote. Also keep in mind that meters turn off at 8 p.m.

Harpoon Brewery

Location: Boston

Address: 306 Northern Ave, Boston, MA 02210

Phone: 617-456-2322

Harpoon Brewery has a Bavarian beer hall feel and is the ideal place to go with a large group. Since they’ve been around for over 30 years, they’ve truly mastered the art of brewing beer. With options such as the Harpoon IPA or the limited edition Camp Wannamango mango pale ale, you’re sure to find something that catches your eye. Oh also, giant pretzels are a thing here, so definitely visit on an empty stomach.

Charter Bus Parking: There is limited parking outside the brewery, but fortunately, there are several parking options close by. We recommend trying the metered on-street parking on Northern Avenue.

Night Shift Brewing

Location: Everett and Lovejoy Wharf

Address: 87 Santilli Hwy, Everett, MA 02149 / 1 Lovejoy Wharf, Suite 101, Boston, MA 02114

Phone: 617-294-4233 / 617-456-7687

With two sit-down locations, one in Everett and another in Lovejoy Wharf, Night Shift Brewing offers two different kinds of ambiance, with high-quality food and drinks. The Everett location is essentially a converted warehouse featuring a new food truck on any given day, while the Lovejoy Wharf spot is a massive restaurant and cafe space that offers incredible coffee as a palate cleanser. (If brews and beans don’t scream Boston, I don’t know what does).

Charter Bus Parking: At the Everett location, there is a parking lot owned by the brewery that is available on a first-come-first-serve basis. In the likely event that the lot is full, there is also free parking along Santilli Highway.

At the Lovejoy Wharf location, there is parking available along Causeway Street.

Trillium Brewing Company

Location: Fort Point / Canton / Fenway

Address: 50 Thomson Place, Boston MA 02210 / 110 Shawmut Road Canton, MA 02021 / 401 Park Drive Boston, MA 02215

Phone: 857-449-0083 / 781-562-0073 / 857-449-0078

The Trillium Brewing Company has three locations, with the most popular one located in Fort Point. It truly encompasses the “modern rustic” vibe with its three-level pub (see: open-plan rooftop) and ranch-style food selections. They’re always introducing new brews that perfectly compliment the season and if their regular beer doesn’t draw you in, their dessert options probably will. Did someone say barrel-aged coconut-pecan stout?!

Charter Bus Parking: There is currently no parking offered by the Fort Point location, which means your charter bus driver will probably need to look for on-street parking. It’s each man for himself, folks.
